Applying the PDSA Model to Acupuncture and Peer Feedback Analysis

Applying the PDSA Model to Acupuncture and Peer Feedback Analysis; alternative modalities

Applying the PDSA Model to Acupuncture and Peer Feedback Analysis

Initial Response

A significant aspect of contemporary health practice is complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine; around 30% of adults use non-conventional modalities. One such modality is acupuncture therapy, which I have employed while managing a case of chronic lower back pain. Acupuncture is a practice that entails the penetration of various body points through the use of thin needles to influence nerves, muscles and connective tissues. This can boost the endorphin levels in the body and the blood flow in patients’ bodies, thus relieving their pain.

Plan

The purpose of the study was to allow patients suffering from chronic lower back pain to be treated with acupuncture. I first searched for acupuncture for chronic pain on credible websites like the NCCIH and journals. I choose a licensed acupuncturist with a positive rating and subsequent appointment to learn about pain experience, reasons for treatment, and other health issues. I agreed with them on some sessions, probably once or twice a week for several weeks, as the treatment plan. I also used a pain diary: this is where I recorded the amount of pain and side effects experienced. Some sources confirming acupuncture’s efficacy in chronic pain include a meta-analysis by Mao et al., (2023).

Do

I received acupuncture twice weekly for eight weeks and followed the acupuncturist's recommendations regarding lifestyle changes, such as exercises and stretches.

Study

During the assessment of results, the pain intensity decreased from an average of 7/10 to 3/10 by the end of the therapy. Mobility increased, and pain was reduced as I could perform daily tasks without discomfort. The only noticeable complication was slight bleeding at the site of the needle puncture, and this was temporary. These findings are backed up by research, as evidenced by Rybicka et al. (2024), who found that acupuncture positively impacts pain and increases functional ability for those suffering from lower back pain.

Act

To prevent any relapse, I agreed to attend an acupuncture session every month and also adopt those recommended exercises and stretches. Other appointments were made with the acupuncturist for check-ups to review the progress and modify the treatment. This experience showed the practical utility of using complementary therapies and proving their effectiveness in improving patient care.

Conclusion

Acupuncture cured my chronic lower back pain; this shows the efficacy of complementary therapies. The PDSA model offered an organized framework through which this unconventional intervention can be both performed and assessed, thus establishing its function in enhancing the patient’s condition.
